We finished moving "most" of the stuff from Burnham's garage on Thursday evening, the 29th. We planned to unload the storage container on Friday and Saturday. Chris was even working out of the house throughout the week on a makeshift card table desk. It worked for him and I think he was just happy to be in his house, though itching to get his desk set up and garage unpacked.
He bought an epoxy floor treatment for the garage. It was one of those love/hate purchases. "I will love having the garage floor treated, but I am dreading having to do it." He enlisted Misha's help (though she may or may not have gotten epoxy on some doorknobs, doors, and faucets). He worked on the floor on Friday morning while I worked on unpacking some of the storage container. We had to move a few key pieces of furniture out of the way in order to get to the boxes that I could actually move.
It was slow going, and I would have to close up the container every so often when it was pouring rain. Friday turned in to a very long day, but what we thought would take us two days to accomplished, we were able to finish in one day. Remember, the stuff in the container was covered in dirt from the monster wind storm when we moved out of the rental. Crazy, but true to form for Klines, we got Chris' air compressor out and blew the dirt off of most of the boxes before carrying them in to the house.
Heartfelt thanks to all those who came and helped, especially those who stuck with us through three moves! Our home teachers should be asking for a change about now.

Walkthrough
Hurray, hurray it is walkthrough day! We met with our builder, Andrew, and construction manager, Dave, for the walkthrough. This was only for the interior. We have friends down the street whose home is not yet finished and the thinking was that the workers would continue to work on the interior punchlist for our house, while also working on finishing the Allen's house so they too could get moved in. We were okay with that. Allen's home was started weeks before ours but because their framers quit halfway through the job, their process was slowed down a lot. We ended up with lots of blue tape all over the house and a long list of things to complete.

House Progress - Closing
May 23rd. So this will be my last "House Progress" post. From now on, it's ours and though I know the next couple of weeks are full of moving, unpacking, and general unfunness, we will also finally have a home to call our own and all of our stuff will be back under one roof.
Closing to refinance our construction loan was schedule and rescheduled due to delays in finishing our home, but we finally signed all of the papers in the afternoon of the 23rd. Hallelujah! Still, the house wasn't finished, but we didn't want to lose our rate.
Our rate. That was a true tender mercy. A year and a half ago, when we first began this process, rates were at an all-time low. The low rates were part of the reason we knew we could manage this whole process. A couple of months later, after committing ourselves to the home-building process, the Fed began to announce a hike in interest rates. We were devastated and looked again at the feasibility of this process. Of course, we had already sold our house and were looking for a rental.
We forged ahead, put the rates out of our minds, and took a wait-and-see attitude. When it came time to begin thinking about locking rates, our builder actually alerted us to a fantastic rate. Since he closes loans as well, he suggested that 4 1/8 with a different company was so much better than even he could do. We jumped on it and offered a prayer of gratitude for one more answered blessing in a year of uncertainty.
We have a home.

EFY and Amy
I drove Amy to the airport on Saturday afternoon to drop her off for her flight. She was heading off to Salt Lake City for a week at BYU's EFY. We were impressed that she was heading off on her own to EFY. As Amy checked in, the Southwest agent asked if I wanted a pass to go with Amy to the gate. I looked at Amy and she shook her head, "I'll be okay." I stayed with her until she got through security and headed down to the trains. I love that after she got her shoes tied she came back to where she could see me and waved goodbye. Such a great kid!
My sister and her family were kind enough to pick Amy up at the airport and host her until Monday morning when she was dropped off at BYU. Susan even planned a family dinner since all of my siblings live in Utah.
We texted off and on throughout the week (more off than on). We figured she was having too much fun to spend time chatting with us. And that was ok. Chris and I both loved a text we received from her on Thursday evening: "It was good day. It was really an eye opener. And I finished the Book of Mormon too!" We love that she is making good choices in her life and that she loves BYU.

Driveway Fun
Remember when my girls saw this green machine sitting on the neighbor's lawn with a "Free"sign on it last Fall? They have loved playing on it ever since. One caution--the breaks are out. So be careful. Especially on our new driveway which is slanted downward and ends in a dirt pile. You just have to learn how to spin out before you reach the end of the drive...or use your feet. But hey, that's all part of the fun. I probably should have them wear a helmet...
School Picnic
Kristen was excited for her last day of school picnic. It truly becomes a parking nightmare. I have taken to parking in the bus lanes because they are empty, they are close, and I am going to be out of there long before the buses show up. Works for me.
We didn't stay too long. I picked up some lunch for Kristen and I which she was happy to snarf down, we chatted with some friends, and grabbed a picture with Mrs. Everett. She was the "best" teacher. So glad that Kristen was in her class this year.

House Progress - May 21
The carpet installer returned to finish the carpet placement in the living room and Chris' office. He had to do a lot of piecing in Chris' office, so I am hoping that it will not be too visible. Amazing how carpet finishes off a room.
The mirrors in the girls' bathroom were installed, though the molding still needed to be applied to the larger mirror.
When the railing was installed on the second floor, the installers cut a big hole in the sheet rock in our closet in order to attach the rail to the wall. It was patched today.
And we are still waiting for granite in the laundry room.

House Progress - May 20
Lots of things were happening at the house except for giving us at move-in date. We finally stepped in and said, we need to be moved in by the 30th. Our builder scheduled an interior walk-through for the 28th with the understanding that much of the work would be completed after we had moved in. We had cleaners scheduled for the 29th. They made a huge difference in the look of the house.
Our door handles were installed on the 20th along with the front door being stained. Matt, the handyman, finished up working on the knuckles on the wrought iron.

Our Stay at the John's
I am quite sure that by the end of our stay, our friends were more than happy to bid us farewell. What started as a two-week layover turned in to a month-long ordeal. Mix in a house full of guests for their daughter's baptism one week-end, and I was feeling very much in the way.
The John's basement was lovely for us to stay in. Chris and I had a bedroom (though we displaced their oldest), the girls all slept in the theatre room, we had a small kitchen area, a bathroom, and Amy only had to walk down the hall to attend seminary. In a crazy situation, it was ideal and we were so grateful for their kindness and generosity.
Kristen loved having friends upstairs. Brynlee and Kayla and Kristen were often playing together.

Dentist
I have taken to scheduling my girls' dental appointments a year out so that I can schedule all of them at the same time. It works great, and I just check-in with each hygienist to make sure each of them are doing well. Then when Dr. Park checks their teeth, the hygienists make sure I know which daughter he is checking so I can be there. It works quite well. Only one of my children were pleased with my picture-taking moments. Can you tell which one?

The changes at the house often happen within hours. I stopped at the house in the morning before dropping Kristen off at school and then returned again before picking Kristen up from school. The appliances were still sitting in the living room and nook in the morning. By the afternoon, they were in place. Hurray! One step closer.

Misha and Amy's Concerts
It was fortunate that Chris made a point to be home on the 15th because Amy and Misha both had school concerts to be to. Chris took Misha to hers and I, along with my entourage of Kristen, Kayla, and Brynlee (John girls), headed to Amy's concert.
Amy's school choirs were performing a lot of Disney songs for the evening. I think it was a lot more fun than the last concert where they performed songs that no one knew and were in different languages. At least the peeps with me liked the songs. When Amy's choir sang their first song, all of the girls in the choir were dressed in princess dresses for "When You Wish Upon a Star."
I will say that among all of the girls, Amy stood out. Not only was she dressed modestly, but there was also just something about her. The choir director, Mrs. Crego didn't want the girls wearing clunky, noisy heals so the footwear didn't really coordinate with the outfits.

House Progress - May 17
Chris and I arrived at the house on Saturday to see this note taped to the front door.
There are little booties inside the house that I am sure most contractors are not using--perhaps the inspector, but probably few others.
We didn't have a lot of time to spend at the house but noted that the stairs off the deck were finally installed. They hadn't been there on Thursday late afternoon when the inspector came for the Certificate of Occupancy. To solve that problem, a piece of plywood was tacked to the posts to curb access off the deck. I guess that lets you pass. The good news is that we passed and have our CO, the bad news is that it came too late for our closing on Friday afternoon. We now have another closing scheduled on Friday, May 23rd. I think things are set to work for that date.
I noticed the flood lights on the main part of the deck had been installed.
And we have two of the three shower doors in place. They come with a special coating that makes cleaning a lot easier. Let's hope. My kids could use any help possible in the cleaning category.

House Progress - May 15
We are still waiting on granite. It was supposed to be installed today, but Dave pushed it off until next week. Not sure why.
One of the tile guys came back to add a strip of accent tile to the outside of the shower. I wasn't terribly thrilled that it had to be added, but something was needed to finish off the top edge of tile. It looks okay. But hello! Say no to crack! Just noticed that.
We are kind of creating our own space with the stove top fan in the kitchen as well as with the microwave. I was against the industrial look of a stainless steel fan that wasn't enclosed. Chris and I happened upon a show home last fall that had the exact look I was looking for. Chris didn't care much. I think the fan was the easiest for the installers to make work as they simply cut out the bottom of the cabinet above the stove top and inserted the fan. The microwave was a bit of a different challenge. Chris and I both wanted a full-size microwave with a handle instead of a push-button open mechanism. The only kind of microwaves with a handle are the over-the-range kind. So, we are getting the over-the-range kind without putting it over the range. If you come to our house, don't ever use the fan on the microwave! It took a bit of planning, but I think it will work...except for the ugly hole the electrician cut in the back of the appliance garage below the microwave (not visible here).

House Progress - May 14
The appliances were delivered today and set in the living room. I imagine they weren't installed because other workers came and began to install the crown on the kitchen cabinets as well as the cabinet knobs and pulls. I wasn't sure exactly where to place the knobs and chose to go three inches down. I had to go over to Wasdens to look at a bathroom cabinet and saw their knobs placed one inch down. I liked it better. By the time I returned, however, the swift hole-driller had already started drilling three inches down. Decision made.
Here's a quick peak at our nearest neighbors.
Dave and I talked about the stack of cabinets that will be placed on the master vanity. I wish that they were shorter so that they could have the same crown molding as the cabinets in the kitchen, but they will still be nice to have. My cabinet (on the bottom) will have an outlet for my hair dryer and such and will open in the opposite direction of Chris' top cabinet. I am looking forward to having a bigger countertop than the small vanity in the rental. Dave suggested that we might want to make the cabinets less deep, but because we added two inches to the counter-top depth, I think we'll be fine for space. Besides, we already took out the linen closet in the master bath because of its awkward placement, and I need all the space I can get.

House Progress - May 12
Tuesday morning. I had talked with Dave on Monday before leaving for the day. There was a concern that we were just a little bit short on the fireplace stone. He wasn't sure if he would be able to finagle any more since it was such a challenge to get the little bit that we needed in the first place. I left thinking we would be short, but when I arrived, all the stone was done. Apparently they had just enough. Great.
Here's a picture of Kristen bored. She has to hang out at the house most mornings until it is time for her to go to school. Thank heavens she can play on my iPad or she'd be REALLY bored!
When I returned in the afternoon after picking up Amy, I walked in the house to find the trim carpenters cutting their mdf trim in the middle of my living room. I WAS LIVID. Was it too much to ask for them to cut on the front porch? Even there they would make a mess but it wouldn't be sifting into my new carpet. I went to the construction trailer in search of Dave. "They are cutting trim in my living room?" I think he already knew it. He just didn't want to have to tell them not to do it. Dave walked over to the house, and I drove back to make sure the saws were removed. Are you kidding me? MDF dust is fine and covers everything. My house is already a mess because of it and these trim carpenters don't have the good sense to see that carpet is on the stairs????? I'm becoming a little less enchanted with this project with each passing day. And my stomach is suffering.
But that is not all. I walked in to the garage with Dave after he shooed the trim carpenters on to the front porch. I spied more carpet and queried, "Where did that come from?" Dave responded, "The carpet guys. They didn't want to install the carpet in the basement so they took it and put it in their van. It was 'Mexican Mother's Day'." I don't care if it was Christmas! "So what you are saying is that they knew all along and they stole it." Dave hemmed, "Well, I wouldn't say they stole it. They just didn't want to do it." I'd say they stole it! I was more livid and flabbergasted. At least they had the good sense or conscience to bring it back.
The stairs to the attic were installed.
And the control for the heated flooring in the bathroom was in place.

Hurry Up and Wait
My life as of late is a lot of hurry up and wait. We have to hurry out of the house by 7:20 am to get Misha to school on time and then wait for an hour before dropping Kristen off at school. After school I pick up Amy and Misha and then wait a half an hour before picking up Kristen. A couple weeks ago, Kristen had after-school activities and talent show practice so we were waiting for her until 4:30. There aren't that many stores in Firestone, and even less are open at 7:45 in the morning. Kristen and I usually hang out at the house in the morning but have found occasion to be at Walgreens, King Soopers, and even one day we hung at The Home Depot on their patio furniture.
Likewise, in the afternoon, the older girls and I stop at the grocery store, get gas, go to the library, get mail from our new mail box, check out house progress while we wait for Kristen. And we have even had occasion to hang out at The Home Depot. This was a day when Amy was still not well. She actually fell asleep on the patio furniture.

Chris to Hong Kong
In the midst of all of the chaos of being homeless and having sickness, Chris headed off to Hong Kong for a week. He left Monday morning after dropping Kristen off at school and didn't get home until Saturday afternoon.
To be honest, I think I have angels bearing me up right now. I'm sure I couldn't make it through all of this without some divine intervention. I am grateful.
While in Hong Kong, Chris' schedule was off from ours. He would go to sleep around 9 am just as we were getting going for the day. He presented a couple of times and was very successful. On the last day after his final presentation, he met up with a mission buddy who played tour guide and took Chris to a number of sites. The weather in Hong Kong was pretty similar to the weather we were experiencing--rain, fog, gloominess.
Chris arrived home on Saturday afternoon around 1:30 pm. He was about an hour sooner than I had expected. Amy and I were shopping in Loveland and tried to hurry home to see Chris. I said try because there was an accident on the freeway. We diverted to the frontage road and then proceeded to watch everyone on the freeway pass us by. The frontage road was more backed up. Boo. We finally made it back to hugs and kisses and requests for presents from Hong Kong.
Chris and I packed up the remaining low-voltage wiring stuff and headed off to the house to work for the afternoon.

House Progress - May 10
Chris and I were pleased to see that the stone for the fireplace was being applied. We changed our minds a couple of months ago and decided to run the stone all the way to the ceiling. I think it was a good decision. The stone we picked, however, was very popular, and it was quite a feat to get the small amount that we needed for the fire place as all stone had been spoken for and a new stone-making run wasn't scheduled until the end of May. We are grateful that Dave was able to pull a few strings.
The carpet was partially installed today. Not sure why the rush to get it installed so far from closing. I am not pleased with all of the dirt that will be deep in the fibers. The living room area was not installed because the stone guy was still working, and seriously it just doesn't make sense to mix mortar and carpet. For that very reason, I also told Dave that once carpet was installed I didn't want the trim guys or any one else using their saws in my house. Not a difficult request, but he was not very happy. Before Chris and I left for the day, I asked the lead carpet installer if they were planning to lay carpet in Chris' office in the basement. We had measured for it and purchased carpet for the space. It looked like they were wrapping things up, so I wanted to make sure they were planning on that space as well. When I talked to the guy he didn't know what I was talking about. "No we don't have enough carpet for this space. You'll have to order another piece." And he remeasured the space. Are you kidding me? I knew that we had our carpet guy measure the space. Neither Chris nor I were very happy. Here was an expense that we had already paid for. I texted Dave to let him know what I had learned and to confirm that yes, indeed, we had ordered enough carpet.
The deck rails were in place. The installer stopped short of putting the stairs on the deck. They were kind of important for getting our Certificate of Occupancy (CO). Apparently he wasn't feeling well and said he'd be back later in the week.
Here's a shot of our outdoor light. We have a few back ordered so Dave put up some temporary cheap-o lights in other locations to get our CO.
And another important requirement for the CO was spindles on the stairs. The center piece is called a knuckle and the decor at the bottom is called a shoe. A simple design but I think it looks sharp.
When we moved a couple of weeks ago, we had nowhere to leave our fridge/freezer and freezer. We were glad to have the electricity on because Chris and friends took the freezer to the basement storage room (along with some food storage) and then made room for the fridge/freezer in the garage. It is nice to have cold drinks available when working. The fridge/freezer will be moved in to the laundry room once we close.
I don't think the furnace and water heater could have been any more snug. We have a 75-gallon water heater and weren't inclined to downsize to a 50-gallon, so I am glad the two were able to fit together.
The carpet was partially installed today. Not sure why the rush to get it installed so far from closing. I am not pleased with all of the dirt that will be deep in the fibers. The living room area was not installed because the stone guy was still working, and seriously it just doesn't make sense to mix mortar and carpet.
