HELLO PEOPLE!!!!!
5 months into my mission and I'm finally writing to you from AUSTRALIA!!! This week has gone so fast, probably because I time traveled and lost a day, but I'm so glad to finally be in my original assignment!
I've found myself missing Arcadia already, but I know I'm where the Lord wants me to be!
Here's what's been going on:
- New area and comp!!
- The flight over (24 hours of my life I won't get back)
- The first few days in Oz!
- Music devotional!
- MY FIRST KOALA
I am serving in Fulham Gardens with Sister Taylor! She's from Samoa and goes home in a few months, but she spent some time visa waiting at the beginning of her mission too! She's had to learn English on the mission so it's been fun helping her continue to learn and teach her some American slang while I'm at it #gas #rizz #fortnite
My area is AT THE BEACH EEEEEK! We literally go beach finding (searching for new friends) it's amazing! We have a great ward, except here, they almost always have several missionaries in one ward, so we share with another set of sisters (who we live with) and a set of elders.
It's crazy and so different to what I'm used to, but lots of fun. We are reopening the area since there weren't new missionaries the last few transfers so there's lots of work to do.
I left California last Tuesday and got here Thursday💀 the flights over were good enough (as good as can be for 18 hours in the air). There was 37 missionaries on my flight to Brisbane! It's a wonder the whole plane didn't get converted.
In whole, 21 new missionaries arrived to the mission, and I'm definitely one of the longest waiters, majority only with a transfer or two under their belt. They're not seasoned vets like myself 💪🫡
First meeting with President Standley
All the new missionaries
It's weird when people ask how long you've been out and instead of saying, "Oh, you're pretty new then" they say, "Oh, alright, so awhile."😵💫
I didn't sleep great on the plane, but luckily, President Standley knows what's up and gave us the first few days to adjust and relax #blessup. We came to the office for a meal, rung our families to tell them we made it safe, and went home to rest.
We came back the next day for orientation, interviews, more meals and then more resting. We ended the night with dinner at President's house, it was gas🫶 I love President and Sister Standley so much already, they're so loving and I can tell they are running this mission based on revelation!
By Saturday, we were headed to our areas with our new companions. This was the worst jetlag day for me, I ended up taking a nap, snoozing through my personal study, and falling asleep for the night at 9:20 pm. Oops.
Last night, we got to go to a music devotional put on by some talented missionaries in the city. The entire chapel and gym was packed!! The devotional was so moving and beautiful, very few dry eyes in the room. It was so cool to see the Spirit tangibly affecting the friends and members we brought, and honestly, that was what first got me crying.
The lady next to me just kept weeping and smiling and saying, "I just love Jesus. Thank you for inviting me sisters!!" over and over again. This absolute washing of the Spirit was exactly what I needed. I had been uncertain over the last day or so whether I could do all the things I needed to do to adjust and be a successful missionary here. I was just overwhelmed. But after this experience, I felt the greatest joy I think I ever have on the mission. I felt a part of this mission, not just the visa waiter anymore.
And I felt overwhelming love for my neighbor and for God. I couldn't help but just thank my Heavenly Father for an experience He knew I needed and for bringing me closer to Him and to the people of Australia.
I was apprehensive about having to redig my roots and get to know everyone all over again, especially with a significant chunk of my mission already done. But after the devotional, I felt so loved.
I reunited with missionaries I knew from the MTC (shoutout Sister Foote, my fav). I got to know new ones and feel like I've known some of these people all my life and like I said before, really feel a part of this mission. Obviously it will take some time to integrate, but I can't help but feel I need to be here NOW, in this moment.
Trust in God's timing. I didn't know why God kept me in California at first. But by the end of my five months, I had some of those reasons. I don't need all of them to know God needed me in California. But Moroni says it best: "..dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith." (Ether 12:6)
God doesn't have to tell us why He does things. But, sometimes, as a merciful and gracious God, he gives us an idea or two of why it had to be His way. Until we receive that witness, we have to trust that God is in the details. He knows why. And He would not lead you astray.
"The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?" (Psalms 118:6)
Normally I end with my spiritual thought but...... I saw a koala. In the wild. I wanted to grab it and hug it and take it home. I did not. But it was freaking awesome, I love this country. And it was literally just on the drive up to President's house. What the heck. Australia rocks.
OK, anyways...
I'm sure I'll have lots more to report next week, but for now I'm just grateful to have finally made it and to get to serve where I am. Love y'all so much, talk to you next week.
