The New Recorder

A couple of weeks ago, I had to write a check for Kristen's new recorder.  It pained me because I knew that we had a couple of them in storage.  Even $3 was too much for a recorder.

Regardless of my distress, Kristen was thrilled with the prospect.  What third-grader isn't excited to get their own recorder?  Especially if they have older siblings who have had them.  Kristen climbed in to the car after getting her brand new, green recorder.  She quickly told me that her teacher had told her that she could not play her recorder in the car for a number of reasons:

Kristen could hurt herself if I was to quickly put on the brakes resulting in her choking on her recorder.  We don't want that.

If Kristen was to blow on her recorder while I was driving, I might mistake the sound for a honking car and that would be distracting.  We don't want that.

Playing the recorder in the confined space of a car could damage our ears.  We don't want that.

I had to say a silent thank you to Mrs. Z.  We just really don't want anyone playing a recorder in the car because...it is annoying.  You can't tell kids that, they'll just do it more.  Choking..let's warn them of the choking hazards.

House Update Oct 24th

Even the smallest changes at the property inspire some excitement.  We were happy to see our sewer line going in.

I also wanted to get some property pictures before the color in the leaves were gone.

A Surprise for Chris

Chris had been away all week.  He missed his birthday.  He wasn't feeling great (I think he was suffering from food poisoning), but whatever it was, he would call us each night around 7 pm to say hi and then goodnight and then sleep soundly for about twelve hours until he had to get up the next morning for meetings.  We surprised him with a FaceTime call around 7 pm on his birthday and sang "Happy Birthday".  I supposed that was a little bit of cheer on an otherwise not-so-great day that should have been great.

Anyway, he was coming home on Friday evening.  I had been arranging with friends to surprise him for dinner.  When he told me how he was feeling throughout the week, I was tempted to call things off, but gave him a few days to recover. Ben and Claudia Ahlstrom were kind enough to give me a ride to Hacienda Colorado to meet up with Chris (he came from the airport).  Unfortunately, I couldn't leave early enough to beat him to the restaurant.  I had to drop Amy off at her friend's house, Kristen had a Halloween party, and Misha was at a sleepover--and they all had to be deposited before I could head off to meet Chris.  So when Chris called and said he was almost to the restaurant and asked how many people we needed to have a table for (thinking that perhaps Ahlstroms would be joining us), I should have just said that I had already called ahead.  Instead I said, "13."

"What?' he asked thinking that maybe he had heard me wrong.

"13." I repeated.

Well, at least he hadn't suspected anything up until that point.  He was touched that I would surprise him and honestly touched that so many good friends would come to celebrate him.

Chris' Birthday

My sweetheart had a birthday.  He wasn't even home to celebrate, and add to that, he wasn't feeling good.  He took a sleeping pill around 7 pm after we sang "Happy Birthday" via Facetime, and we were able to speak briefly to him again on Thursday morning.  That's quite a bummer way to spend a birthday.

Volumizing

Apparently, if you place your iPod in a glass, the glass will amplify the sound for you. Probably not the best solution visually, but perhaps a shorter glass?

3rd Grade

I volunteered in Kristen's class this morning.  Loved one of the first little girls who talked to me and asked whose mom I was.  "You're pretty."  she said.  I am excited that Kristen has Mrs. Everett this year.  She is an excellent teacher.  Kristen said to me once that she didn't ever want to be sick because she didn't want to miss anything Mrs. Everett might teach.

There happens to be a snake that lives in the classroom in an aquarium.  I have actually not seen him yet since he seems to hide under the sawdust, BUT I did happen to spy the three baby mice so nicely shrink-wrapped on the counter.  EW!

Karma

For years in our Monarch Estates home, we lived next to a family that always had dogs.  They had two dogs when they first moved in that barked incessantly.  Seriously nonstop--at nothing.  It was annoying to say the least.  A few years later, Kristen joined our family and her bedroom was on the side of the house that shared a fence with these particular neighbors.  She was probably about five months old when I just couldn't take the dog barking any longer.  It was so loud and obnoxious that it woke her up from her nap every. single. day.

I walked over to the neighbor's house to ask them to please quiet their dogs.  They weren't home.  I was so fed up at this point that I wasn't going to just let it slide.  I returned home, wrote a note explaining the situation, and taped it to their front door.  I had just had enough of a tired baby (and maybe I was little cranky too).

The wife later came over to apologize and suggested that they would try to keep the dogs in more or get them dog collars (though they didn't like the idea since it was unfair to the dogs).  Well, I tell you, waking up my baby on a daily basis was unfair as well.

I can't say that I was at all disappointed when both dogs got old and died.  My relief was only short-lived however as two new dogs showed up in the back yard within a month or so.  Ughghg.

I was not in the least sad about moving away from these neighbors.  There was no love lost during our nine years living next to each other.  It was sad.  We tried to be friendly.  So the Karma?  We sold our house earlier this year and some nice grandparents moved in...with their two dogs.  One of which happened to be named Charlie.  The name of our neighbor.

Shortly after we sold our house, Charlie put his house up for sale.  And...he lamented to our other neighbors that he hoped "Charlie" the dog wouldn't be too noisy and barking when he was having showings at his house.  I guess little Charlie-dog was fun, friendly, and a barker.  It was karma.

Monday in Utah

The benefits to having a membership with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science were abundant on Monday.  Our first stop was the Dinosaur Museum at Thanksgiving Point.  They had a "Tinkering" exhibit on loan from the Exploratorium in San Francisco.  I think my girls spent an hour just at this small section.  Their favorite was the wind tunnel and trying to create papercrafts that would fly best.  They tried little helicopters that had them back and forth between the work table and the wind tunnels.

We spent a little time working our way through the rest of the museum, but Tinkerings was the favorite part by far.  By the time we left, it was time for lunch.  We had a stop to make first at my brothers' optometry practice to fix Kristen's glasses that were broken in her crash last month with the garbage can.  Luckily for us, the glasses were still under warranty.  Even more lucky, my brother had spent time tracking down a new pair of the discontinued pair of glasses for us.  So thoughtful.

We don't always agree on lunch options, so Chris took the older two girls to Smashburger for lunch.  Kristen and I had a small date to the Bakery Cafe.  She loved the one on one time with her mom--and the plain spaghetti with a meatball.

After lunch, we had a little time left before heading to the airport.  We decided to visit The Leonardo--another museum.  Again, free.  The girls stopped first at the Spooky Science exhibit and then set off to explore the rest.

Time to go home.

Sunday in Utah

The bonus to having three brothers living close together was that we had choices for when we wanted to attend church.  We chose 10:30 church with my oldest brother Brad.  My girls weren't terribly thrilled with three hours of church, but luckily for them, they were used to it.

When we arrived back at my youngest brother's house, he was enjoying a Sunday-afternoon nap.  We quietly made some snacks.  We were having Canadian Thanksgiving dinner at my other brother's house at 5 pm and figured we could get by on popcorn for an afternoon snack.  Chris and I wanted to go for a drive to Saratoga Springs to check out the growth.  Our girls were more interested in vegging at Mitch's and watching some new movies.  That's the nice thing about having older girls.  They are pretty self-sufficient.

It rained on us as we drove, but we were amazed by the growth on the other side of the lake.  It seemed less busy and more rural--much more to our liking.

Our family dinner was lovely.  Donna and Dallin were wonderful hosts and we topped the evening with family pictures.  One of these days we are going to have to find a location outside.  I am just not great at indoor pics.  I did get to try out my new remote but found out that you have to be in direct line-of-sight for it to work.  I think the only good picture I got was bit out of focus, but it made us all smile.  Good memories.

Misha kept saying how much fun it would be to have a little baby at our house like Matthew.  Her funny comment:  "Some babies are so much fun and interesting.  Other babies should just stay asleep!"

Saturday in Utah

Though we wished we could have attended more of the homecoming activities at BYU, it just wasn't feasible with Jenna's wedding.  We did, however, make it down to BYU for the Homecoming Parade.  If anything, the day inspired even more dreams of BYU for my girls.  Yay them.  We left my brother's home in Lehi around 10 am and figured if we made our way to the end of the parade route, we would be just in time.  Indeed.  The parade was a little spread out but fun.  Kristen enjoyed chasing down the treats tossed her way.  College students are sometimes too cool to pick up candy.  She didn't mind.

We met up with our girls' most favorite babysitter.  (Sorry for the backside shot.  I was on the other side of the street in the shade where the lighting was better.)  Tacy was a part of the EMT "float" and the girls were excited to get a wave from her.  I"m pretty sure she saved the dummy.  After the parade, we met up with Tacy and she spent some time showing the girls around a bit and hanging out with us in the BYU bookstore.

We parted ways to meet up with another friend, Julie S., for lunch at Cafe Rio.  That restaurant makes bank.  They were busy the whole time we were there and that was mid afternoon.  We decided to take a jaunt up Provo Canyon to Vivian Park to enjoy the fall colors.  Their Fall is a little ahead of ours as many of their trees have lost leaves already.  Still, it was beautiful.

Julie had plans for the evening and Chris and Amy were headed to the football game with two of my brothers and my dad.  They dropped my mom off with Misha, Kristen, and I.  We shopped at the mall for awhile and grabbed some dinner at the food court.  I'm sure my mom could have kept on shopping, but us younger girls were just plain tired.

We headed back to Lehi where we stopped at my oldest brother's house to drop my mom off and watch the end of the game.

Jenna's Wedding Day

Let me preface this be saying that I remember the day Jenna was born, July 4th, and we watched fireworks from the hospital room window.  What a lovely young lady.  We were thrilled to be able to  celebrate "her" day.

The weather on Friday morning was so much better than the forecast had predicted.  No rain.  Woohoo.  I was worried I would have to pull out the umbrellas.  Besides, no one wants cold and rain on their wedding day.  We drove to the Provo Temple and pointed out places of interest to our girls as we drove, especially UVU, formerly known as UVSC, where we first met.

The girls were able to wait in a small waiting room while we were in the temple for the ceremony.  It wasn't terribly exciting for them since their cousins hadn't arrived yet, but they had iPods to keep them busy.

Crazy how you think back and it was just like yesterday when Chris and I were getting married.  Seriously, it hardly feels as though it were 16 years.  A nice tradition for Jenna though--she got married on the year of her parents' 25th anniversary, and on the year of her grandparents' 50th anniversary.  She has great examples to follow.

After the ceremony, we headed down to the waiting room to pick up our girls and then outside.  We had a little time, so Chris and I walked down to our parking spot to retrieve my camera.  I captured some fun moments from the day.

Pretty funny when my nephew arrived with the flowers and boutonnieres for the wedding party and mentioned that they were for the pall bearers!

We had a little more time until the family luncheon in Lindon.  The girls were excited to visit the BYU campus.  In hindsight, we never really planned for our visit to BYU to have such a positive impact on our girls, but they are so thrilled to attend someday.  Amy would love to skip from high school right to college now.  Chris and I are excited that they are excited.  It was good motivation to keep working hard and to begin going above and beyond.  College was some of the funnest years of my life.  I look forward to them having some amazing experiences as well.  Besides, any place that combines BYU and Chick-fil-A is tops in Amy's book!

I am not sure we would have easily found the church building in Lindon without GPS.  My parents arrived about the same time as we did and got out of their car saying, "Thank heavens for 'On-star'."  We joined the two families inside for a nice lunch.

Kristen wanted to stay with her cousin Lissy, and in all of the craziness of wedding day planning for the mother-of-the bride, my sister agreed to let Kristen and Lissy hang out for the afternoon.  Perhaps it made life easier having her youngest occupied.

Chris and I and the older girls drove around a bit.  We had thought to go see a movie, but the times didn't really match up well for the reception later in the evening.  We ended up at the Thanksgiving Point Gardens.  We left Amy sleeping in the car and Misha playing her iPod.  Chris and I ventured and found that our membership at Denver Museum of Nature and Science allowed us free entrance.  They also had golf carts that you could drive around the gardens.  We figured that would perk the girls up and add a little enthusiasm to us rousing them from the car.

Sadly, we found out that there was a waiting list for the carts.  Hmmm. Pouting.  We headed out anyway and stopped first in front of a grand lawn.  Kids were rolling down the hill and Misha said she wanted to try as well.  I think I shocked her a bit when I said I would roll down the hill with her.  I felt a bit whoozy after but it was fun.  Half way down the hill, I could hear Chris and Amy yelling, "Stop.  Stop!"  I opened my eyes and focused as much as possible to see the edge of the grass and the beginning of the flower bed coming in to my view in a very fast way.  I stopped just in time.

It was a bit of crazy, spontaneous fun.  The hill wasn't too straight however, and Misha and I kept heading off in crazy directions.

We started to explore the grounds when Amy decided to go back to the front desk and just check to see if a golf cart was available.  It was and she encouraged us strongly to come back.  We did.  Such a lovely place to spend the afternoon.

We returned to the Stake Center by my sister's home for the evening reception.  Guests arrived most of the night to greet Jenna and Joey--even after the reception was over.  We however were tired of waiting to help clean up and just started putting chairs away.  It had been a long day and we were all pretty pooped.  Congratulations Joey and Jenna.  We loved sharing your day with you.

A Surprise at the Airport

You know Kristen is excited for her day when she is up and out of bed before 7 am.  Sadly that was Wednesday morning, and she had her days mixed up.  We weren't leaving for Utah until Thursday after school.  We got the girls all packed to go Wednesday evening.  We should know by now that unless we are heading to Florida, our Fall Break Getaway is going to be chilly.  We packed for different scenarios--cold, wind, rain--and I think we got a little of all of it.  At least it didn't snow.

Chris arrived home from the airport around 2:45 pm on Thursday afternoon.  He emptied out his suitcase and quickly packed it up again.  Amy and Misha arrived home from school at 3 pm and tried to load some last-minute movies and such on to their iPods.  Perhaps next time they will plan ahead a little more.  Chris was on a call, so I loaded up the Pilot.  We were ready to go by 3:35 pm, just in time to pick Kristen up from school and head to the airport.  She was so excited, she came racing toward the car and hopped in.

Our flight was a little late, so we knew we had some extra time at the airport to grab a quick dinner.  So glad we did.  Kristen had her dinner from McDonald's, Amy and Misha from the Italian place, and Chris and I from the Mexican restaurant.  We had all just sat down to eat when I happened to look up, "Hey, there's your dad!"  Everyone thought I was joking until they looked up to see Grandpa Kline standing in line at McDonald's...for a salad (I must clarify).  Amy was off quick as a flash and nearly tackled her grandfather.  The others raced off to hug Grandpa.  I stayed with all of our carry-ons until Kristen returned to the table.  What are the odds?  Well, greater when your grandfather is a pilot, but it was an amazing opportunity to spend a little time together.  We didn't have a lot of time to chat, but it was enough.

We snapped a few pictures and then headed off to our gate where boarding was already in process, and Chris had already missed his boarding group.  He quickly boarded and headed to the back of the plane to save seats.  Even so, people didn't like that he saved seats.  Oh well, we like to sit together.  The girls and I finally board in the "B" group.  And then we waited.  And waited.  And waited some more.  Apparently the computers were down and all of the weights and balances had to be calculated by hand.  Twice since they messed up the first time.

It was a good opportunity to further promote the benefit of succeeding in math class.  You DO use math once you get out of school!

We finally got off the ground about an hour and a half after our scheduled time.  Boo.  We picked up our luggage in SLC, loaded up our rental car, stopped for groceries, and arrived at my brother Mitch's house around 10 pm.  We were all exhausted.  I guess Mitch had just taken off about 15 minutes prior to go and exercise.  We saw him a little bit later as we herded kids to bed.
