Kristen has been pretty excited to be out on her bike this month. She graduated from the tricycle of last year and is now riding a two-wheeler with training wheels. From our house to the mailbox there is a slight slope. Not a big deal if you are walking or experienced riding a bike, but when you are just figuring out how to pedal and haven't yet progressed to how to stop, that speeding up, lack of control feeling can be pretty scary. As evidenced by Kristen's cries of panic. She put her foot down to try stop her bike, but in doing so, her foot slid back under the training wheel and she still had no control.
It became obvious that I needed to offer a few simple bike-riding tips.
1) Don't use your foot to stop.
2) When you need to stop, push back on the pedal.
We spent the next twenty minutes practicing how to stop the right way. I would guess that in her next panic moment, she'll put her foot down, but she's learning.
