Amy Getting Settled

Amy had Monday off from work (and school didn't start until Wednesday) which allowed her time to get moved in to her new apartment and organized.

Can you see that color coordinated closet?

She put together the new over the toilet metal shelving.

She still needs to get settled in with kitchen stuff, but that will come later in the week.

Kristen's Mission Email - Week 9

HELLO PEOPLE!!

This week I will have completed my first full transfer in the field. As always, it's wild how fast it's flown.

Here's the weekly rundown!
  • Transfer news!! (I'm going back to my OG assignment)
  • Trio exchanges
  • Singing at the retirement home
  • Jessica's baptism!
This week was somehow the least eventful week thus far but I will try my hardest to make it so incredibly riveting for your reading pleasure!

I am going back to my original assignment in Covina with Sister Pennington for the next transfer (Walnut Creek Ward), and so we will be moving all our stuff back to our original pad...again. Regardless, I'm so grateful for the time I got to spend being companions with Sister Whitlock. We are two peas in a pod, and she's headed to the other side of the mission.

Unfortunately that means we'll probably have to bet on seeing each other in the small world of Utah. I'll miss the two weeks we had together. And I'll also miss having a couch in my pad. But in-house laundry is back baby oh yeah!!!

We did exchanges this week with some of the sisters in Glendora and La Verne because Sis Whitlock is an STL (sister training leader). This meant we went with an hermana and one of my favorite sisters and fellow trainee, Sis Shrader. We giggle a lot when we're together.

And I led my area for the first time! I was so nervous because that meant planning and leading and guiding the other two missionaries all day but I survived nonetheless. I'm a big girl missionary now!

I got to sing at the retirement center we serve at which was so fun for me. However, Sis Whitlock, who played the piano, got bumped off the piano bench by the activities director who loved the limelight. Let me tell you, getting applauded by four 90 year olds will boost your ego like none other. I guess it's good practice for when I'll perform at zone conference.😭

I told Sis Pennington I would do it if I stayed another transfer (this was a while back when I thought there was no way I'd stay for another transfer😐)

Remember Jessica from way back when? We taught her my very first day and she threw some crazy lore our way Day 1. But despite it all, she got baptized!! Since we handed her over to the YSA sisters to complete her teaching, we didn't plan it or anything, but we got to be there to support her. It was awesome and I like to think I did something to help her come closer to her Savior.

Her testimony is beautiful and it was cool to watch it grow and progress!

Spiritual thought this week.... my companions and I did a "Holy hour", where we studied what it means to be holy. It was super powerful because I discovered being Holy is possible for each and every one of us and we all, as children of God, have a degree of that in us. We can grow that by turning our will to God's and becoming new creatures in Christ. As we do so, we become holier, and equally happier.

I love you all and am thankful you stick around to read. Until next week🤩

Love you much,
Sister Kline

Chris and Amy to Utah

It just worked out that Chris had meetings with his work team in Park City. He and Amy both flew to Utah early Sunday morning.

Amy's flight on Southwest left on time just after 8 am. Chris' flight was delayed almost an hour. Apparently someone had left the door open while maintaining and getting the plane ready for the next flight and the interior was infested with flies!

Chris' flight left an hour later. He sent this shot of Brainard Lake where we hiked a couple of weeks ago and saw the big moose.

Chris and Amy will meet up at the airport. From there they will go pick up the second Mazda (the car Kristen drove while in Utah) and drive to Amy's new place. Both cars are filled with stuff, so they will unload those and then head over to Mitch's to pick up the rest of Amy's stuff.

Mitch was kind enough to let Amy keep her stuff for a couple of days while she was homeless.

Chris' brother, Kevin, will come to help with the move along with Amy's boyfriend, Zac. It shouldn't take too long.

Amy will need to drive Chris to Salt Lake where he will then catch an Uber (or something similar) to Park City for his meetings through Wednesday (from there he goes to Austin for a few days before coming home).

Amy's First Time Seeing Our New Lot

After the Air Show, we drove back to Grandwood Ranch so that Amy could see not only the model and some of the design ideas and finishes, but also see our lot and the newly dug basement.

Amy got to meet Linsey, the General Manager, and check out the place. The model has an awesome view; ours will be a bit limited from it, but the view definitely caught our attention the first time we visited this model a year ago for the Parade of Homes.

After checking out the house, we drove over to our home site and got more excited about the build.

Misha and Amy might have climbed on the machinery even though their mom told them not to!

After visiting the lot, Misha drove back to her place and we were happy to Amy driving with us. Not only did we get to spend time with her, but we also got to take the HOV lane for FREE!

Pikes Peak Regional Air Show

Chris got us tickets to the Pikes Peak Regional Air Show at Ft. Carson in Colorado Springs. The Blue Angels were the featured flyers.

There were a lot of attendees, so it involved A LOT of waiting in lines of car to get parked, and then in lines of people waiting to get into the entrance. The line from our car to the entrance was at least a mile long!

We didn't appreciate the line cutters or line skippers. Amy might have had a few things to say to them <cheaters!>.

It was one of the hottest days in the Springs. They don't usually get close to 100°, but it was slated to be a hot day. I tried to pack a lot of drinks—water, soda, coke—to keep us hydrated.

We finally reached the front of the entrance line and found a spot to get situated. We had two regular size camp chairs, Misha had her small one, and a small blanket to claim our space.

We did our best to stay hydrated and protected with sunscreen and my small umbrella.

Chris took the girls to check out some of the displays while I stayed with our stuff.

We enjoyed flying demonstrations of F-18s (or whatever number they were), lots of older planes, and finally the main entertainment of the Blue Angels.

We did opt to leave a little early to avoid the crazy traffic but we still got a good show as we walked to our car. We wanted to show Amy the Alliance model and our lot too (Linsey was leaving at 4:45, so we needed to leave time for traffic and we had to drop by the hotel we stayed in for Misha to pick up her car).

We might have all been a little overheated and sunburned in a place or two where we forgot to apply the sunscreen.

27th Anniversary

In all of our busy weekend appointments and happenings, our 27th anniversary snuck quietly in. After our builder's meeting in Monument, we stopped at Costa Vida for dinner. We had planned to go somewhere nicer, but it was already late by the time we left our property and a sit down dinner would mean eating even later.

No pics of just the two of us, but this is one with Amy and Misha.

We will celebrate next weekend when Chris is home from Utah and Texas.

I wrote on Facebook:

"1409 weeks

9861 days

236,688 Hours

14,201,280 Minutes

852,076,800 Seconds...

That's what 27 years looks like, and yet the time with Chris Kline has passed in a blink it seems. Love you."

We have had 27 amazing year together and look forward to just as many more in this life and forever to come.

House Plan Review in Monument

Chris flew in on Friday afternoon. His plane was a little late arriving. I picked him up at the airport and we headed off toward Monument.

We were going to be a few minutes late but not crazy late.

We met our house superintendents, Michael and Warren, and went over the house plans in detail to sign off on them.

We were excited to see that not only had the tree removal happened, but our basement was just about finished being dug.

And the good news is that they were able to save a lot of the bigger trees.

Amy to Colorado

Amy flew to Colorado on Thursday evening for the Pikes Peak Regional Air Show in Colorado Springs on Saturday.

Misha picked her up at the airport and they enjoyed time together before joining Chris and me in the Springs.

They started with dinner at Old Chicago with pizza.

On Friday morning, the girls enjoyed brunch on campus where Misha also got to show Amy around her work a bit.

There might have been a little ear piercing involved later in the day. Amy actually pierced Misha's lobes with a second piercing. Ugh. I don't think I would enjoy doing that. Right up there with the feeling of roots breaking when you pull out teeth!

Amy and Misha drove to Colorado Springs after a dinner of leftovers at Misha's place. Chris had fallen asleep early since he was on East Coast time. I tried to stay awake for them, but they made a stop at Target. So by the time they "pounded" on the hotel room door, I had been asleep for half an hour.

They got settled and turned lights out, and I was suddenly wide awake. That little bit of sleep was enough to keep me awake until 1 am! Ugh!

Busy Work Week for Chris

Chris flew to New York on Monday afternoon. I drove him to the airport because I needed to pick him up on Friday to drive to Colorado Springs.

Chris had Zoom meetings all day on Tuesday and then a dinner Tuesday evening. He was supposed to have been in Texas in person instead of on a Zoom meeting, but things got changed around at the last minute.

The weather in NYC was the nicest he had experienced in quite some time. He ordered lunch from a restaurant close to his hotel and enjoyed lunch outside.

From NYC he flew to Chicago for another dinner meeting. His hotel was close to the airport since he had to leave early the next morning, but that meant he had to take a train for one hour into the city for his dinner meeting.

He left from the Chicago on Thursday morning to fly to Atlanta for the last dinner meeting.

Fortunately, he was able to arrive early enough on Thursday that he could go visit his mom, see her new apartment, and visit a Civil War train museum with her.

Lots packed into one week, and next week will be almost as busy with flights!

Kristen's Mission Email - Week 8

HELLO PEOPLE!!

Big news... I am now in a trio!!!! A sister I came in with went home unexpectedly this last week and her trainer got combined with me and Sister Pennington's companionship!

Her name is Sister Whitlock and I love her so much already. We are very spazzy and high energy (and Sister Pennington is very patient as a result). Because of this, we are now covering her ward and area in Glendora (right next to us) as well as ours.

Unfortunately, that is a whole other zone and so now we have two of everything to attend. It's been a hectic week. We ended up moving out of our pad into Sister Whitlock's all within 24 hours. Luckily, this chaos will only last us the remainder of our transfer (about 2 weeks).

By next P-Day, I'll have word on whether I'm staying here, switching companions, moving to another area, etc. Odds are Sister Pennington and I will go back to our old area, but you never know!!

Here's the weekly recap!
Exchanges with Hermana Molina🥰
Prayer answerers🙌
Sweet treats from members😋
Locked out of our apartment😁
Trio shenaningans🤩

I got to do an exchange with my STL, Hermana Molina, this week. When we went out, I stood there while she spoke in Spanish and smiled. I picked up a few words, "Jesucristo, compañera, etc.", but it was cool to see the work we do in another language.

It was that morning I found out we'd be in a trio. We exchanged back at Raising Canes (or con-ez as Hermana Molina says it), and Sister Pennington and I spent a good portion of time packing up our entire pad for two weeks :(

We couldn't fit another sister in our home in Covina, so it made more sense for us to be in Glendora. Our last night as a duo, we talked to SO MANY people (locked in as we would say), since we figured we wouldn't have a whole lot of time to in the foreseeable future.

One person was a young mom named Stephanie. We met her outside, walking around her complex. We explained the Book of Mormon and the joy we receive from Jesus Christ and she was so excited to read it. She said she had been praying for something like this and we were the sign she'd been looking for from God. We can't wait to meet up with her again! Sister Pennington and I were so excited to meet someone so prepared for the message we share and some happy tears may have been shed.

The highlights of my week may have been getting free sweet treats from members (if you know me, that's on brand).  One of the stake presidency members owns some Crumbl franchises. During district lunch, one of the sisters suggested stopping by to see if he could maybe possibly be there and if he would maybe possibly give us a few cookies on the house. Fortunately he was and he got us some, plus extras.

A few nights later, we got some ice cream at Handel's. Standing behind us in line was a member couple who insisted on paying for our treats. It sounds silly to be so excited about it but I'm so grateful for our members and all they do for their missionaries!

We went out for our first morning walk as a trio and as we're walking down the stairs, Sister Whitlock gasps. She forgot the keys. We made a call to our gracious housing coordinator, Elder Allred, who drove 40 minutes one way from Pasadena and opened our door. We are just silly forgetful missionaries after all, even if we are on the Lord's errand.

Teaching as a trio might seem a bit daunting, but we've handled it pretty well. We laughed when President asked on our big New Missionary Call how teaching 50/50 was going. How about 33/33/33?

Here's the funniest thing I said this week: My trainer(s) had me start talking to someone on the street and I tripped walking towards them. They were not interested and didn't believe in God. I said afterwards, "I'm glad I only tripped in front of an atheist."

Spiritual thought! Prayer is an interaction with the Godhead. We might think it's just us talking to our Heavenly Father, but we pray IN the name of Jesus Christ and receive answers and inspiration THROUGH the Holy Ghost. Every time we kneel down to pray, we have a personal experience with each member of the Godhead. As such, prayer brings us closer to our Savior and Heavenly Father and helps us better recognize how the Holy Ghost speaks to each of us. Pray always!! That simple act will bring you closer to the most important people--the Godhead! I love you all so much, the weeks are flying. No visa update, probably here for another six weeks 🥲 God's will!!!

Til' we meet,
Sister Kline

Amy at the Derby

Amy enjoyed the Derby in Utah last night with Zac.

There were decorated cars, a rain delay, Top Gun music, and a truck demolition round. All good stuff to make the evening fun.

Amy Packing Up

While not her favorite thing in the world (really who DOES love packing?) Amy spent most of Saturday packing up her apartment. It is pretty amazing how much stuff you begin to accumulate even while in college.

Since she has to be out of her apartment on the 14th and can't move into her new apartment until the 18th, Mitch has kindly allowed her to store her stuff in his garage for a few days. She moved a lot of stuff on Saturday and will get the rest of the stuff moved later this week.

Chris Biking with Friends

While Chris and his friends used to bike together frequently, life seems to have gotten busier for everyone. More often than Chris goes biking on his own. However, today he had the chance to go with Blaine Allen (our neighbor) and Sam Hendrix.

Chris, Sam, Blaine

Chris

They biked at Limber Pines in Hermit Park for about 10 miles. (Chris, Misha and I hiked to Kreuger Rock earlier this summer on the same trail.) They left early on Saturday morning at 6:30 am and got back around noon. While tiring, biking still has a rejuvenating effect on Chris, and he was happy to hang out with his buds and catch up.

Yard Work

Chris and I have spent hours doing yard work and weeding this past week. We are so over this yard! While it looks lovely, it requires tremendous effort and upkeep!

Chris worked a couple of hours each night after work weeding and mowing the lawn.

I spent 4 hours down at the beach weeding, cleaning up debris and making things look presentable. The sad thing is that I spent a couple of hours a couple of weeks ago doing the same thing!

It has been cooler for the past couple of days, so it made time outside bearable in the afternoon. The drawback? The mosquitos were quite active. Even wearing pants and long-sleeves they seem to attack me. I have a huge bite on my hip that some stupid mosquito must have really enjoyed!

Tree Removal at Sunnyvale Court

Some of the trees were removed on our lot so that digging can begin.

While we are disappointed to see so many trees taken down, it is exciting to see things are underway!

Kristen's Mission Email - Week 7

Hi people!

We're almost to FOUR WEEKS in the field. I've said it before, but time is so weird in the mission.

Here's the weekly rundown!
Zone conference!🫶
Creeper party🎮
Ice cream fixes everything🍨
Hanging out with old peeps👵
Service for our local hoarder😬
My favorite new convert🤩

REALLY QUICK VISA UPDATE: Australian visas are slowed right now and so I might be able to go to Adelaide before next transfer, but odds aren't looking good. Any prayers towards that would be greatly appreciated, but at the end of the day, wherever I am is where God needs me!

This week was one of the best so far. I got to go to my first ever zone conference (half of the mission gets together for training and activities) and it was really up lifting. We talked about inviting and recognizing the Spirit with our friends and in our own lives. We heard some really good musical numbers, but I'm worried someone might rope me into singing at the next zone conference (assuming I'm still there).

They talk about magnifying your talents, but I still get nervous when I perform😬.

We got to hear from the mission leadership, do a Kahoot (game), eat 1/4 burgers this week (we go to In N' Out a lot), and practice our missionary work!

Sister Pennington and I realized we both love making Minecraft villager sounds and decided we would plan a two person creeper party. We decorated our pad, got some treats, and her mom sent us some sunglasses that I plan on wearing for the remainder of my mission #bestcompanionever #iloveminecraft #twopersonpartiesarethebest

We had an interesting experience with an inactive member this week. If I'm being candid, it was a very unholy experience. There was an evil aura attached to the whole visit and we wanted to get out of her home as soon as possible. She said a lot of things that left us both weary of her. Thankfully, hearing such things didn't rattle either of our testimonies, and strengthened them if anything.

However, after an experience like that, we were both left feeling spiritually drained and sat in our car for awhile after, not really knowing what to do. We had about 30 minutes left in our day. I was pretty visibly upset, having never been in a situation like that before, so Sister Pennington suggested we get some ice cream to cheer us up.

She really is an angel because that was exactly what I needed to turn our night around. The ice cream was amazing (sorry mom, I forgot to take a picture).

We did SOOOO much service this week (like ~15 hours). We spent some of that at an independent living community for retired folks, doing stretching, coloring, chatting, and games with them.

An old man who doesn't speak was quite fond of me and Sister Pennington. We figured that out pretty quickly because he kept grabbing our hands and kissing them! We thought it was cute the first few times but were a little over it towards the end. Chivalry is not dead apparently.

Side note: DO NOT accuse old people of cheating in games. One of the other residents made that mistake and got some profanities in return. They're feisty for not remembering what you said 15 seconds before.

Sister Pennington told one lady she was from Oklahoma about 10 times. It went like this:

"Where are you from?"
"Oklahoma"
"Oh, my sister lives there. I can't remember the town."
"Tulsa, right?"
"How did you know that?!"

Our other service was spent at a sweet members house. She came to us asking if we could help her organize her backyard and move some hefty things around (aka ovens). However, she had probably 100 big totes in her backyard filled with all kinds of things (at least 5 were just cookbooks).

We enlisted the help of 8 of our elders over two days and we were able to get MOST of it done. She was incredibly gracious and bought everyone In N' Out both days. Before the mission I would've grumbled about having to do so much unpaid labor, but it's my favorite thing to do on the mission!

"And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God." Mosiah 2:17

Edward recently joined the church, and as missionaries we work with new converts to support them through this new change in their life. Since Ed lives alone, and we're sisters, we can't meet in his home without another woman present. Last week, we went to a pizza place with him. This week, we went to his house and he surprised us with a pizza, half with my favorite toppings, half with Sister Pennington's.

He also remembered our drinks of choice, set out two lawn chairs, a table, and talked to us through his door. He was trying to be so nonchalant about it. He's not an emotional guy, but we're glad he is comfortable with us. He was pretty bummed when the elders left, so we must be doing something right!!

Spiritual thought: Nothing super profound here, but an important thing to continuously recognize! Christ's atonement is so amazing because He makes up ANY and ALL the difference we can't. He walks every step with us and then some. He will complete the race after all we can do. There is nowhere too far, no mistake so bad, that we can't be made new through Him.

It is a joy to be a little better each day, and He's given us that opportunity! Don't forget how much He loves you!! I love you all too! Thanks for keeping up with me, I know I have lots of words in me.

Love, Sister Kline

Kristen's Address

We still haven't received word of Kristen's VISA. We are praying, keeping our fingers crossed, fasting...all the good stuff.

Her current mission leaders, President and Sister Jones, would be just as happy if it didn't come soon, but Kristen is definitely ready to head to Australia.

If you wish to send her a note, the best way is by email or snail mail.

Fires in Colorado

With the dry and hot weather we have had lately, 4 fires have popped up in Colorado.

  • Quarry fire in Jefferson County
  • Alexander Mountain fire in Larimer County,
  • Stone Canyon fire in Boulder and Larimer counties
  • Lake Shore fire in Boulder County
One person died in the Stone Canyon fire and multiple buildings have burned.

The skies over Colorado have been smoky but seemed to have cleared some this weekend.

Colorado River Trail Hike

Chris and I planned to hike in RMNP again today. Though we had reservations for Bear Lake, we opted to find a new hike.

I had some things ready to go Friday night and then was up early on Saturday morning making our lunch so we could leave early. We were out of the house by 7:30 am.

Passing the lake as we arrived in Estes Park, Chris and I were both surprised to see how calm the water was! No wind. So unusual.

Chris chose the Colorado River Trail on the west side of RMNP. We decided to drive up the Old Fall River Road. The skies were just a little smoky from the wildfires, but not too bad. We could still see blue sky!

Old Fall River Road winds up the side of Mount Chapin's south face for 9.4 miles on a one-way gravel road until it tops out at the Alpine Visitor Center.  We passed by Chasm Falls, Fall River Pass, and Chapin Trailhead.

We stopped at a new spot along Fall River Road to check out the Willow Park Patrol Cabin (also known as Willow Park Ranger Station or Willow Park Cook and Mess Hall). It was built in 1923 and was originally built to house maintenance crews on the Fall River Road.

Today there is a cabin, a vault toilet, covered barn, picnic benches and a lovely meadow.

We opted not to hike the Chapin Trail (maybe another time) or the Marmot Point Trail and continued on past the Alpine Visitor Center and down to the west side of RMNP.

We had to follow some slow (very cautious) drivers and were happy when our turn off for the Colorado River Trailhead appeared. We quickly found a spot to park, loaded up our gear, stopped at the pit toilets, talked to the volunteer ranger, and got started on our hike. This hike is the location of the headwaters of the Colorado River that begin from snowmelt.

The Colorado River runs through seven states: Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona and California.

The original plan was to hike about 4 miles and then return.

Somehow we ended up hiking 13 miles instead!

We passed by the deteriorating cabin at Crater Creek. This was 2.18 miles in (I took note of it).

Another trail marker was a little past the ruins.

We planned to go to Lulu City. There wasn't much remaining there but it was a beautiful meadow with a stream running through it.

The side trip to Lulu City added an extra mile or so. Fortunately, Chris took a picture of the map at the trailhead. AllTrails wasn't working great for us.

I think it was the idea that Little Yellowstone might be awesome. So, we continued on to check it out. We had to skirt around mountains, follow narrow trails, and cross streams running the gulches. I did find some cool mushrooms.

We met up with three guys from France. They passed us by as we sat on the side of the trail somewhat close to Little Yellowstone and were eating our lunch. One of the men said, "Bon appetit" as he passed by.

We caught up to the men a bit after we finished our lunch and they had stopped to take a breather. We found out that they were attending a chemistry conference in Fort Collins. Two of the men were from Marseilles and the other from Toulouse. They spoke pretty good english.

There was no sign announcing that we had arrived at Little Yellowstone, so we actually hiked right past it as we had expected something a lot more spectacular. Just note that Chris and I don't recommend hiking to it unless you are trying to get in some mountain hiking!

Our hike took us to a road that would have eventually led to LaPoudre Pass. We stopped at the road and approximately 7 miles in.

As we turned around to hike allllllll the way back down to the trailhead, we passed the french guys again. They had thought to follow the road back down instead of the trail. That would have been 11 miles down instead of the 6 or so. I tried to get a picture of them without being too obvious about it.

I think I have mentioned before that 7 or 8 miles total is my sweet spot for hiking. After that, the aches start to set in. My feet were most sore.

The treat of the day was that we got to see another moose shortly after we stopped at the Crater Creek house and stretched our legs. From the cabin, I knew we had 2.18 miles to go. Ugh.

Misha's Crazy Day at Work

Misha had the craziest day at work. There was an event scheduled and that was progressing fine, but there was a code blue (EMS needed) out in the parking lot because this lady with a concussion was trying to drive and had walked straight into a window right before.

Misha spent an hour on standby taking care of that and getting the woman into a friend's car so she could get somewhere safely.

Then Misha had to go do a water bottle donation, then a shirt audit, and then the elevator broke!

She was the point person for the scheduled event so everyone was coming to find her every so often to do something for them.

By 3:40 in the afternoon she had been trying to eat her lunch for over an hour and it was the first time she got a chance to sit down for more than 2 minutes all day.

Another Stellar Month for Amy at Work

Amy had another stellar month at work. She came in at 390% of her goal and closed 26 loans for the month of July.

She gets bonuses for doing excellent work and loves that perk!
