Amy's Migraine

Amy has been suffering from a migraine headache for a couple of days now. It started on Thursday and unfortunately she had to work most of the day since someone else had already called out sick. Her boss finally let her go home around 3:00 pm.

Amy found someone to work for her on Friday, she didn't have to work Saturday or Sunday, and Monday is a holiday.

She heated up her rice warmer and wrapped it around her head which brought a little bit of comfort.

She has tried Excedrin and Excedrin Migraine but nothing seems to help. Here's hoping she feels better soon. She tried to get an appointment with her doctor for Monday, but hasn't heard back yet to know if an appointment is available.

A Letter to Kristen

Chris and I mentioned to our friend, Ben Newson, that Kristen's mission was not always sunshine and roses for her, and that she had days where she struggled. He shared with us some of his experiences, and we, in turn, asked if he would mind sharing them with Kristen.

This is his thoughtful and kind response:

Sister Kline!

I hope this email finds you working with all your heart, might, mind, and strength! What a blessing and privilege to be in the service of the Lord! I heard you finally made it to Australia! Glad that worked out.

It was amazing to me on my mission to see a different part of the world and how differently people lived in other parts of the world. It was both fun and humbling to see this difference from my own home in Colorado.

I wanted to share a story and experience from my mission that has helped me. Hopefully it helps you. Strap in this is a long email ;)

First the story...

There once was a man who was asleep one night in his cabin when suddenly his room filled with light and the Savior appeared to him. The Lord told him He had a work for him to do and showed him a large rock explaining that he was to push against the rock with all his might.

This the man did, and for many days, he toiled from sunup to sundown; his shoulder set squarely against the cold massive surface of the rock, pushing with all his might.

Each night the man returned to his cabin sore and worn out, feeling his whole day had been spent in vain. Seeing that the man showed signs of discouragement, Satan decided to enter the picture–placing thoughts in the man’s mind, such as “Why kill yourself over this? You’re never going to move it!” or “Boy, you’ve been at it a long time and you haven’t even scratched the surface!” etc., giving the man the impression that the task was impossible and the man was an unworthy servant because he wasn’t moving the massive stone.

These thoughts discouraged and disheartened the man and he started to ease up in his efforts. “Why kill myself?” he thought. “I’ll just put in my time putting forth just the minimum of effort and that will be good enough.” And this he did or at least planned on doing until, one day, he decided to take his troubles to the Lord.

“Lord,” he said, “I have labored hard and long in Your service, putting forth all my strength to do that which You have asked of me. Yet after all this time, I have not even budged that rock even half a millimeter. What is wrong? Why am I failing?”

To this the Lord responded compassionately, “My friend, when long ago I asked you to serve Me and you accepted, I told you to push against the rock with all your strength and that you have done. But never once did I mention to you that I expected you to move it. At least not by yourself. Your task was to push. And now you come to Me, your strength spent, thinking that you have failed, ready to quit. But is this really so?

"Look at yourself. Your arms are strong and muscled; your back sinewed and brown. Your hands are calloused from constant pressure and your legs have become massive and hard. Through opposition you have grown much and your ability now far surpasses that which you used to have. Yet still, you haven’t succeeded in moving the rock; and you come to Me now with a heavy heart and your strength spent.

I, my friend, will move the rock. Your calling was to be obedient and push, and to exercise your faith and trust in My wisdom, and this you have done.”

Now you might guess where this is going but I wanted to share something about experiences with companions while serving as a missionary. I was asked to work with some problem elders on my mission. I guess I was the babysitter, but I learned early in the mission that I needed to humble myself to have the spirit in my companionship. Without that, the work was frustrated and no one was having any fun.

Let me explain.

My MTC companion hated me. I don’t think I really knew why but guess he thought I was arrogant and proud, which I was. But he would not follow the rules. Stupid stuff like getting out of bed on time and getting to MTC church on time. Just little stuff like that. Not stuff that you get sent home for, but just enough to annoy everyone around you.

I had to learn to let go of some of my expectations for what I wanted my mission to be and learn to work together with someone that maybe I didn’t want to or didn’t agree with on many many fronts. It was hard.

Fast forward to Argentina when the mission president assigned me an elder that was so homesick he would barely work. “Work with him, Elder Newson.” I was told.

I learned to not get upset at the many breaks throughout the day that we would need to take because he was tired. Or the lack of companionship study we would do because of his unwillingness to participate. I could have been very upset with him as many of his previous companions had been and not gotten along and not had any success in our area. But from my MTC experience, I knew we had to have the spirit with us if we were going to have any chance of success.

So, I let go of some of the frustration and just loved him. It wasn’t easy. I started by shining his shoes. Something I had heard about growing up but was surprised no one did it or that no companion of mine really ever shined my shoes.

I started to encourage the breaks during the days in the hot sun and would stop for a drink or ice cream to make the break better. Slowly our companionship got better and my companion became more willing to do things he would never do like companionship study.

I stopped being constantly upset with him on the little things I thought he was falling short on. I stopped thinking of him dragging me down and stopped focusing on where I thought things were supposed to be or how my mission was supposed to be.

I realized that this is what the Savior does with each of us. He meets us where we are. He doesn’t chastise us for where we should be. Or get angry at us that we are not where he is. Or get frustrated that he has to “work” with us because we are not at his level. He loves us. He serves us. He loves and encourages our effort. He works with us on where we are at and he makes up the rest.

I became better for doing that with my companion and left the rest to the Lord. Like the story above. He can do more with the rocks/challenges/companions in our lives than we can. He requires trust, effort and work.

I hope this is helpful. And hope you find joy in the service of your mission. A lot of growth and change happened for me. Most of which was not easy. I loved my mission for what it did for me and how I was able to bless others. It wasn’t easy or everything I imagined it to be before I got there. But it turned out to be what I needed and what the Lord needed me to learn and become. His Disciple.

Our House is on the Market Again!

Our house is on the market again as of January 16th. Krissy White is our agent and we are impressed with her. Our house was listed as "Coming Soon" on January 9 and officially on the market one week later.

The 16th was also the day of the broker open house when other agents were invited to come and see.

On January 18, we were supposed to have a neighbor and friends open house. However, it was also the same day the frigid cold arrived in Colorado along with about 4 inches of snow. It was -1° in the morning and we opted to postpone the open house to another day.

The weather is a fickle thing and January is certainly not the ideal time to list a house, but we are confident with Krissy's skills and networking, that our house will be sold.

Frigid Blast of Cold

Much of the United States felt the effects of the frigid blast of cold air this weekend. Our temperatures dropped from the 50s to - degrees overnight. With that also came the snow.

Misha and I went out to shovel the driveway and the sidewalk. Misha was also kind enough to shovel the driveway for our next door neighbors who are in Vail for the long weekend.

There is always something satisfying to see the driveway and walkway totally dry. Plus, it is a pretty good workout. I spent about an hour clearing the sidewalk and entry to the house as well as the concrete in front of the garage.

It Is Well With My Soul

Kristen and her companion, Sister Emma Coleman, posted a short video clip on Facebook of them singing, "It Is Well With My Soul" (one of my favorite songs). What a treat to find it!

"Sometimes, we may feel like we're drowning. Like we're so far beneath the waves that no one could possibly reach us. We may feel like our "sorrows like sea billows roll." But, no matter what, we can find hope in Christ and His Atonement.

"Our sins are "nailed to the cross, and [we] bear [them] no more." Jesus Christ took them from us. We can feel peace, no matter how lost in the dark we feel. We can reach out to Him because He lived and died and lived again for us! If you want to find hope through Jesus Christ, message me🫶🏻🫶🏻"

Carpet Rake

Now this might not seem like a romantic gift to you, but it is certainly going to save me a lot of time...especially during the "Selling Our House" phase of life that we are in right now.

Chris got me this carpet rake for Christmas.

This handy dandy rake saves so much time in refreshing the carpet and erasing footprints prior to a showing.

Sunnyvale Ct - Closet Walk

The drywall is up and the second coat on the tape and seams is almost done (one more to go). Chris and I had a closet walk at the house on Friday. We talked about the design of all of our closets with the shelves and rods as well as the mantels/woodwork for the fireplaces.

We were excited to see the recent work being done. Just as excited to have a heated home to walk through on a cold winter day with lighting in some of the rooms.

These are a few pictures that Chris took for his records.

Dining Room

From the dining room looking into main floor guest room on the left, kitchen in the middle, and front hall on the right. The inset is where a cabinets will go to hold Grandma Andrew's china.

Kitchen (there will be a tall cabinet on the right with the microwave and oven that balances out the bump out on the left).

Chris and I came back to the house on Saturday to mark the placement of the tv mount on the living room fireplace and to take a few measurements in our offices and the gym.

Kristen's Mission Email - Week 30

Hello people! Happy 7 months to me this week!

Hard to believe it's been so long already!! This one will be quick because I'm bored and need to buy groceries!
  • Crocheting frenzy
  • Baptisms w my buds!
  • Princess AND friends
I've discovered Spotlight, which is if Bed Bath & Beyond and Michael's had a baby. We got some yarn and I've been crocheting all week which is great for two reasons:

1) new sweater and
2) it keeps me off my phone. Win win!

Sister Woodbury and I (my flatmate) will sit and crochet and chat and I thoroughly enjoy that part of my day.

We got to go do baptisms at the temple this week with one of Sister Coleman's recent converts from her old area. It was great and I saw my faves, Sis Bradbeer and Sis Foote!!

Sister Bradbeer and Kristen

The spirit was so strong and I'm grateful to have a temple close to me.

Princess came to church again this week and brought her mom and brother! We will teach all of them this week and I love how willing she is to learn and grow. She's so golden.

My mom recommended I share what I do for my journaling. I've had some really low moments on the mission, but each day I record joy moments: 3 times I felt joy or gratitude that day. Then I have my spirit cameo—some point in the day where I felt or was guided by the Holy Ghost. And on those hard days, where I might have to find something silly I liked that day, or just say I felt the Spirit in my personal study, the point is finding joy and the Spirit in the midst of anxiety, turmoil, bad circumstances, and other people's agency.

I would recommend implementing some variation of this into your journaling, it honestly helps! Hope this week is awesome!

Love yous!!! Sis Kline

Happy Anniversary Grandma and Grandpa Rice

My parents are celebrating 62 years of marriage today.

62 years is also:

  • 744 months
  • 3235 weeks
  • 22646 days

That's a huge accomplishment. Congratulations Mom and Dad!

Misha to Steamboat with Friends

Quick weekend in steamboat with friends. We stayed at a condo Airbnb and most everyone spent the days skiing or snowboarding. I was put on driver duty to take people to the mountain and otherwise we chilled and hung out around town.

Hiking in the Garden of the Gods

Chris and I stayed over in Colorado Springs on Friday after the closet walk to finish up a few things on Saturday. We got an early start with a hike at Garden of the Gods. It was pretty chilly and windy. While the sky was bright blue when we started, almost two hours later and the clouds had blown in.

After our hike:

Before our hike:

The Siamese Twin rock formations.

After the hike, we got some lunch and drove back to the house to do some measuring for the fireplace tv mount (see entry below) and to get some more pictures.

We stopped at IKEA on our way home. It is safe to say that a trip to IKEA with Chris is a whole different experience than with Kristen. Kristen and I can spend an hour and a half to two hours perusing. Chris and I were in and out in 30 minutes...and even that was probably too long for him. To be fair, there were a lot of people in the store on a Saturday afternoon.

Selling our House-Take Two

We have a great new realtor who is confident that she will get our house sold and quickly. Our property was listed as "Coming Soon" on Thursday, January 9. It won't be "on the market" until January 16 where we will start actively having showings, but in the Coming Soon stage, our realtor is able to start talking about the property and sharing it with her brokerage and contacts.

Our house was the featured house in the January 9th brokerage meeting and Krissy sent out an invite to 17,000 agents for the broker open house on January 16th. She will have treats, social media content available for agents, and a drawing for a stand up paddle board.

She has posted on Facebook and Instagram. The For Sale sign went up in front of our house on Thursday and on Saturday she door knocked all 37 houses on the Pelican Shores South and Pelican Shores North neighborhood to invite them to another open house for neighbors on the 16th. She has been busy and we are impressed. If you lived close by, I'd say come for the pastries that she has ordered!

New house photos (above) and the "Look Book" that she will give out at the broker open house.

First Snow of Winter

We had our first real snow of winter with enough snow on the ground to be shoveled. I don't mind the lack of snow, though I do know we need the moisture.

I will enjoy it this year. As we move to Monument, I am pretty sure we have a lot more snow to "enjoy"!

It made for a beautiful drive and winter wonderland on Wednesday morning.

Kristen's Mission Email - Week 29

Hi people!! Happy 2025! I was living in the future before 95% of you (you should be very jealous).

Here's what happened this week!
New Year's Eve
Transfer call
Princess!!
Volleyball bad
New comp!

We started off the new year by going to bed even earlier than normal...10pm! And it was delightful, although maybe not as exciting as fireworks or staying up. Next year!

Kristen and Sister Taylor

District lunch Monday before transfers

We had our transfer call Wednesday night, where we all hop onto a huge zoom call and everyone finds out their transfer news altogether. Sister Templeman is up in Darwin now, Sister Ulukau is still here with her new companion, Sister Woodbury, and Sister Taylor went down to Mt. Gambier. There is lots of screaming and gasps and giggles as we all find out our fate one by one.

Princess is the golden referral. Remember how I said we talked about baptism last week after church? Well, we went over for our lesson this week and she brought it back up. So, Princess is locked and getting baptized on February 2💪🌊🤩

PLEASE PRAY FOR HER, she's so prepared. Shoutout to her friend in Ghana who recommended the church 💗

My noggin has suffered some trauma on the mission, and apparently that is continuing. I was playing volleyball like usual on Friday night when a ball got absolutely spiked into my head. I've never been so grateful for the wide surface area of my big forehead because even though it was a pretty direct hit, had the ball hit any lower, it probably would've broken my glasses and given me a bloody nose.

Everyone was so worried and made sure I was okay, but clearly they don't know how hardheaded I am🤭 And of course I kept playing right after, I was just mildly woozy. But that won't stop me😏

Since Sister Taylor shipped off to Mt. Gambier, I got paired up with Sister Coleman! She actually served with my MTC comp for a little while (I luv u Sis Foote), she's from Missouri, and goes home in just a few transfers! So far, we're getting along pretty well and I'm excited to see what we can do together!

Since we're starting in Doctrine and Covenants this year for Come, Follow Me, I wanted to share something cool someone said in Sunday School yesterday.

Each chapter of D&C is an answer to prayer, moreover, an answer to someone's question. That's 138 answers to prayer! We might look at that and say, great, I wish my answers were written and itemized with footnotes too! But the Lord doesn't cease to speak to us.

We receive answers via many Heavenly sources, and they're not always given directly and in our face because a) the Spirit speaks to all of us differently and b) the Lord knows and trusts that we can figure out what exactly He's trying to say.

As frustrating as that may be when we aren't seeing or understanding the answers we receive, we have to continue believing that we will receive those answers! Pray to see them when they come, and He will make it known in a way that is unmistakable. I love you all so much, and hope you had a happy new year. I go home in 2025 which is crazy!! Have a great week!!

Family Chat Screen Shot

A funny screen shot from our conversation with Kristen:

Kristen at Costco in Australia

One of Kristen's companions has a Costco membership, so a group of missionaries stopped the other day. Kristen sent a short video clip saying how much it felt like home just walking through Costco.

Every good reminder helps a missionary's heart.

Helping at an Accident On the Way to Longmont

Chris and I were on our way into Longmont Saturday morning to help clean the church. The roads were clear (and much like the other night coming home from the symphony), and then all of a sudden they were black ice.

We didn't see the actual accident happen, but we were there just as cars were pulling over on the side of the road to help. Chris pulled over to help as well and added, "Call 9-1-1!" I just stayed in the car trying to answer the questions of the 9-1-1 operator as best I could as a bystander. The side of the road was a steep enough drop off that I couldn't even see the car that had slid off the road.

Chris came back looking for our glass break device. No luck. It must have been removed at some point but he has been smart enough to keep a pair of latex gloves in the inside pocket of his puffy jacket. He put those on.

Next, I called Jake from our ward who was coordinating the church cleaning and told him what was going on. He said not to worry about continuing on to the church; they had it covered.

Chris and the other good Samaritans must have been able to get to the two ladies in the car because the next time I saw Chris, he wasn't wearing his jacket. He had used it to cover up the driver.

A police car arrived on scene first (but didn't do much to stop the traffic), then an ambulance and two fire trucks. Chris is the one you can see across the road in his hoodie showing the emergency vehicles where to pull over.

Pics from Chris:

Chris stayed on-scene until help arrived and he was no longer needed. He was able to retrieve his jacket and returned to the car. Crazy how road conditions changed so quickly. The black ice only lasted for a short section after the train tracks and then conditions were clear again.

10,000 Days Married

Last August, I posted on Facebook for our anniversary:

"1409 weeks, 9861 days, 236,688 hours, 14,201,280 minutes or 852,076,800 seconds...That's what 27 years looks like, and yet the time with Chris Kline has passed in a blink it seems. Love you."

We were so close to 10,000 days that I was curious to see what day in the coming months that we would actually hit it. Imagine my surprise when I used an online day calculator and it showed January 1, 2025!

I have been sitting on that tidbit of information until January 1, 2025 when I again posted on Facebook:

"Chris and I weren't thinking so far in the future to plan this out, but it is pretty impressive that we have been married 10,000 days on January 1, 2025! 10,000 days married to Chris Kline have been the best days of my life."

Incidentally, 20,000 days lands on May 19, 2052.
