We found out after awhile as we walked in the kitchen and noticed water seeping up through the hardwood floor boards! We were quick to apply towels and get fans started, hoping that our floor wasn't ruined. Our friend and home teacher, Robert Wagner, happened to be coming for a visit right in the middle of the catastrophe. He and Chris came up with a plan; Rob headed home to change clothes and grab some tools and returned to help fix stuff. Those are the best kind of home teaching visits.
Rob and Chris cut through the back of one of our kitchen cabinets and then through the sheetrock. The hose bib was exposed at that point.
We had the builders come and look and everything appeared to be installed correctly which indicated that someone at our house had hooked up a hose at some point in the fall, water was left in the pipe and froze. We paid to have a plumber look at the pipe and then replace it. We now have a vent on the back of the cabinet to allow warm air to get to the pipe in the winter since it is on an exterior wall. Let's hope that it never happens again.
Our floor seems to be okay. I hope that we were able to get everything dried out enough.
