Saturday, June 25
It was a sleep in kind of day. We were all so worn out, Chris and I just couldn't bring ourselves to get the girls up early. Besides we didn't really have to be anywhere at a specific time. We could take tours at the Library of Congress at 10:30, 11:30 or 1:30. We opted for the 11:30 am tour at the Library of Congress Thomas Jefferson Building. My book lovers, Kristen and Misha, we're excited for this tour. Beyond the fact that it was in the second National Treasure movie, it had books. Sadly the children's section was closed on Saturday.
We were broken off in to smaller tour groups and followed our docent around as she explained the different cool features of the building. We saw the original Guttenberg and Mainz Bibles. Amy and Misha weren't too captivated by the tour and opted to go off on their own.
By the time we left the Library of Congress, we were more than ready for food and stopped at a great pizzeria called "We The Pizza".
We walked back to the Supreme Court building. Some people were more disappointed than others to find that it was closed on Saturdays. The girls got their first exposure to protests and protestors.
So we headed back past the pizzeria toward the Eastern Market. It wasn't huge but fun to look around at the different stalls and artists. Chris treated the girls to some freshly made donuts and then some gelato later at Pitango Gelato. Amy could eat the gelato.
Next stop, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. We saw a pair of Dorothy's ruby slippers from "The Wizard of Oz". I spent most of my time in the war exhibit. I found it fascinating. Everyone else found other cool places to explore. When Chris and I met up again as it was getting close to what we thought was closing time, we checked out the First Lady Inaugural Ball dress.
We had hoped to have dinner at a Potbelly's restaurant close to Residence Inn where we stayed, but it had closed maybe ten minutes before we got there. We picked up some Chipotle for the girls to eat back in the room. Amy's knees were hurting so she was happy to be off them for the day. Misha spent some time working on driver's ed. We were quick to change in to our flip flops and Chris and I went out for dinner at the Grill Kabob just down the street. The food was mediocre. Chris and I walked around the neighborhood for a short time. Our hotel looked out on Thomas Circle which had a few churches, a roundabout, and businesses. We snapped a few pictures, especially one of this cool gate, but were just too tired for more. We headed back upstairs and crashed. Misha and Kristen had showered while we were gone and were getting ready for bed when we returned.
I commented to the family on enjoying being in the same hotel and not having to pack up day after day, "I like that we aren't moving from place to place." Misha was quick to reply, "Oh we're moving all right. We just come back to the same place."
