Amy's New Job

I am so impressed with the motivation of this girl.  For the past year (since she was 14) she has worked at the Longmont Athletic Club in their kids' zone as a babysitter.  Once she got her lifeguard certification, she had hoped that she would have more hours during the summer.  Not so.  In fact, her boss gave Amy these stupid 30-45 minutes shifts.  Totally not worth my time and gas to drive her in to work, nor her time either.  When Amy taught a swimming class, she only got paid for the actual time teaching and not any of the prep time when she was required to be there.

So, it was with no regret, but a big, happy sigh of relief, when Amy received not one, but two job offers.  Apparently when a website says you have to be 16 to work, it isn't always so if they need you.

Amy turned down the job offer from Longmont Recreation and accepted the closer position at the Carbon Valley Rec Center in Frederick.  Frederick is maybe 5 minutes closer than Longmont and LAC, but it does make a difference.  Plus Carbon Valley pays better.  Amy is looking forward to her first paycheck as she has worked more in the first week than she ever did in a month at LAC.  But, it was a great place to start for a 14-year old.

Amy was not thrilled that she had to do the lifeguard swim test at Carbon Valley again, but she wanted the job badly enough that she was willing to put in that effort.  I cheered her on as she swam the 300 m.  

Apparently, Carbon Valley requires their lifeguards to swim the 300 m every month, so she'll get really good at it.  I was impressed that she spent her first week in training.  At LAC, she was expected to teach without any training  and "deal with it." She started working on July 28th.

And because it was free Slurpee day at 7-11, we stopped to get one on our way home.
